DAILY INSIDER
by : Dinno Erece

All seats taken at standing room only ito.

Nanood ng concert sina Rainier Castillo at Yasmien Kurdi (but not together) and LJ Reyes of batch one and two ng StarStruck, pati na rin ang ibang artista tulad nina Chynna Ortaleza and Railey Valeroso.

I Luv NY, also that night.

‘I Luv NY’ takes Filipino soaps to a new level

Wednesday, May 17, 2006

IF ABS-CBN 2 has been capitalizing on remakes of old movies (such as Panday and Bituing Walang Ningning) and old soap operas (such as Gulong ng Palad) to bolster prime-time ratings, then its rival network GMA 7 is bent on sustaining its two-year prime-time ratings supremacy by coming up with an original: a daily teleserye shot largely in New York City. The move translates into a trailblazing product and a new element into the Filipino soap opera: A foreign locale for a setting and therefore a touch of the travelogue.

The teleserye is the first Pinoy soap opera to be taped largely in a foreign land. And as if to make sure nobody misses the point that the series was shot in that world-famous city, the show has been simply titled I Luv NY. Pitted against ABS-CBN’s Bituing Walang Ningning, the soap opera started airing on Monday.

As expected, GMA 7 does not want to reveal I Luv NY’s budget.

Simply because both the outdoor and indoor scenes were shot in the Big Apple, its total production budget would surely be higher than even the GMA 7 special effects-heavy fantasy series for which massive sets had to be built in old warehouses that were converted to studios (such as those used for Encantadia, which later became Etheria).

Only the four lead stars of the series were brought to New York for taping though: Jolina Magdangal, Marvin Agustin, Jennylyn Mercado and Mark Herras. A minimal crew and technical staff accompanied them with director Louie Ignacio. The network hired a New York-based production group to secure all the necessary filming permits and to coordinate with the establishments and individuals they would need.

The shoot in the “city that doesn’t sleep” was therefore not a guerrilla operation. The taping went on for the whole month of April. It was summer in the Philippines but balmy spring in the United States—but for transient Pinoys like Jolina, Marvin, Jennylyn and Mark, who are not used to the temperate zone, that time of the year in the United States may just have been winter! They were in jackets, blazers, sweaters and turtlenecks most of the time on- and off-camera, appropriately and inappropriately!

In the story, only Mark’s character—Baste—is a visitor in the United States from equatorial Philippines. Baste won his ticket to the United States via a TV contest and was in fact meant to go to Los Angeles. Some booking errors took him to New York instead, much to his disappointment, because he is obsessed with getting to California not just for a lark but to look for his long-lost mom, whom he last heard to be having the time of her life in the sunny state.

In New York, Baste meets the rebellious Natalie (Jennylyn), the high-strung Albert (Marvin), and screwball Polly (Jolina). His Philippine-acquired angst gets entangled with theirs and those of their families and friends.

The series’ other stars (most of whom shot in Manila houses that could pass for New York’s indoors) are: William Martinez and his real-life wife, Yayo Aguila, Tirso Cruz 3rd, Carmi Martin, Gabby Eigenmann, Alfred Vargas, Isabel Oli, Mike Tan, LJ Reyes, Kirby de Jesus, Neil Ferreira and Krizzy Jareño.

The series also revives the Jolina-Marvin and Jennylyn-Mark love teams. The former screen couple were last seen on an ABS-CBN dramedy series three or four years ago as both Jolina and Marvin used to be on exclusive contract with the Lopez-owned network. It was Jolina who bolted out first in favor of GMA 7.

Marvin, however, is not managed by GMA 7 these days but by the film producer Orly Ilacad.

As for Jennylyn and Mark, both discoveries of GMA 7’s Starstruck star search contest, they have broken off as sweethearts in real life thus prompting the network to tentatively team them up with other stars before putting them together again in I Luv NY. The love flame was not rekindled between them even in cold and faraway New York, though both swear that they rediscovered each other as friends off-cam while in that foreign city.

Jennylyn pulls in crowd, pleases with sexy performance

Masayang-masaya si Jennylyn Mercado nitong nakaraan niyang 19th birthday. Natupad ang wish niyang maging successful ang kanyang first major solo concert ("Music In Me") na itinaon sa kanyang birthday last May 15. SRO (as in Standing Room Only) ang venue.

May duet si Jennylyn with Janno Gibbs and also with Christian Bautista, her special guest.

Spotted at the audience were LJ Reyes, Rainier Castillo, Raymond Gutierrez, Chynna Ortaleza and Valerie Concepcion.

HOT N SPICY
by : Vinia Vivar

Jennylyn gave her best para makapagbigay ng isang magandang show.

* * *

Well…

Jennylyn in Concert

Article posted May 16, 2006

It's been raining gifts for Jennylyn Mercado, who celebrated her 19th birthday last May 15. Jen has been up to many things. There's "I Luv New York", the first Filipino television series shot in the Big Apple. She stars in this brand new series with Mark Herras, Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin.

There's also her new clothing line, which she hopes to launch soon. And let's not forget her successful birthday concert, which was not only her first major concert, but her first self-produced event as well.

Even though Jen is used to the life of an artista, where one can get almost anything one desires, her birthday wishes were simple. "Sana maging super blessed yung pareho kong shows. Saka maging masaya ako at maging successful pa yung career ko at saka maging colorful pa yung life ko," Jen says.

Her fellow cast members from "I Luv New York" have their own wishes for the birthday girl.

Good health, kasi pagbalik niya from New York na-over fatigue siya, so syempre dapat alagaan niya yung sarili niya dahil ito po yung bumubuhay sa aming lahat. More projects to come. Sana yung love team naming tumagal pa. At more birthdays to come. I mean sa aming dalawa naman kapag may problema yung isa, we talk to each other."

I wish her all the best."

And last but not the least, Jolina Magdangal says, "Sana sumobrang-sobrang successful ang birthday concert niya kasi alam ko first concert niya and I think, deserving siya na maraming manood at maging successful kasi sobrang hardworking iyang batang yan at nakita kong mabait siya sa mga fans niya at dapat talagang na bumalik sa kanya yon."

The Birthday Party

Given the outpouring of support from fans and celebrity friends, it is without a doubt that the birthday girl did get her birthday wish for a successful show. The venue was packed with Jen's followers, including special Kapuso friends Rainier Castillo, Raymond Gutierrez, LJ Moreno, Chynna Ortaleza and Ms. Lani Mercado.

Jen started things off with a spirited rendition of J Lo's "Jenny from the Block." She made good on her promise that her birthday concert would be a different kind of event, as she and her guests entertained screaming fans with delightful costume changes, kilig song and dance numbers.

She also showed that the baby is now becoming a lady. Some of her outfits were more mature and slightly more daring. From black skintight numbers to long white flowing gowns, Jen showed that she's more than just the cute girl next door.

Special guests like Aiza Seguerra rocked the house and had everyone in the house cheering and clapping. The already wild audience went into a frenzy when Jen introduced her very special guest, the one she had been keeping a secret only describing him as someone she's always wanted to do a duet with. The mystery guest was none other than crooner Christian Bautista. The duo sang Tina Arena's "Burn" to the delight of everyone.

A portion of the concert's proceeds will benefit the Bata Foundation, something that Jen felt was another way she could give back to the community. She sang "Heal the World," and was surprised when two kids that she has been taking care of came on stage to give her a stuffed toy as their way of saying "thank you" to her.

Another of her guests was Mr. Janno Gibbs. Together, they performed a moving rendition of their hit song "Moments of Love." After Janno, who should come in but Jen's heartthrob ka-love team, the Bad Boy of the Dance Floor, Mark Herras. After wowing the audience with his killer moves, Mark was serenaded by the birthday girl, who sang "Bakit ba Ganyan." To heat things up for everyone, Mark and Jen did a sizzling dirty dance number that had every one at the edge of their seats. You can tell that even up to now, everyone can't get enough of the Jen-Mark love team.

Last but not the least on Jen's birthday guest list was Hale. The popular band performed all of their hits, while the crowd sang along. The concert ended with an unforgettable song number that involved confetti and fireworks.

After the show, the audience got free gifts, courtesy of Jennylyn.

You can catch Jennylyn on "I Luv NY" weeknights after Majika.

Forgot to greet Jen during her birthday? It's not too late! Simply text JENNYLYN [Your Message] and send to 2364 for Globe and Sun or 4627 for Smart and Talk 'N Text.

Banggaang ‘BWN’ at ‘ILNY,’ ’di tuloy!

c/o livestrong of igma

by : Nitz Mirallez

Ayaw nitong pumayag at baka magmukhang mall show ang concert.

ABOUT SHOWBIZ Nitz Miralles

After TV Patrol ang soap ni Sarah Geronimo and after Majika naman ang I Luv NY.
